Mike Mayben, Head Coach
Coach Mayben is in his ninth year as the Head Softball Coach at North Medford. His current overall record is 180-56 and his teams have won 3 State Championships. He was selected as Oregon 6A Softball Coach of the Year in 2009, 2012 and 2013. He was also awarded the Conference Coach of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Before coaching softball at North Medford, Coach Mayben coached the Southern Oregon Riverdogs Amateur Baseball Team for three seasons. He has also coached football at North Medford High School and McLoughlin Middle School. Coach Mayben grew up in the Rogue Valley and played for some very successful baseball teams and coaches. His 13 year-old Medford Babe Ruth team won the World Series in Millville, NJ. He also played for numerous state championship teams during Little League, Babe Ruth, and American Legion. He was a part of Coach Jim McAbee’s State Runner-Up team at North Medford in 1994. Coach Mayben went on to play baseball at Western Baptist College (currently Corban University) in Salem, OR. He was recognized for many career accomplishments as a collegiate athlete, including: most valuable player, most inspirational player, golden glove award, and he remains in the offensive record books at Corban.
Coach Mayben is passionate about seeing athletes reach their fullest potential on and off of the field. He cares about each player as a student and as a player. The high standards he holds for his players are balanced by his genuine concern for them as individuals. He works hard to hold efficient and productive practices every day. He makes sure to give credit to the players when they achieve success.
Coach Mayben currently teaches video production, web design, and computer skills at North Medford High School. He is married to Casey and they have two daughters, Taelor and Mia.

Rod Rumrey, Assistant Coach
Coach Rumrey is a legendary coach in Oregon. He has coached multiple sports at several high schools for over 40 years. He is most known for the success he had as the Head Football Coach at North Medford High School from 1988-2000 and 2004-2005. His 1993 squad won the State Championship and he coached the 2000 team to a runner-up finish. Coach Rumrey also coached his Sweet Home High School Football Team to a State Championship. After being an assistant softball coach under Larry Binney here at North Medford from 1990-2002, Coach Rumrey returned to assist Coach Mayben in 2008. He was inducted into the Medford Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
No one can match the passion that Coach Rumrey has to see each player get the most out of their athletic experience. Coach Rumrey breathes and bleeds his motto to “never cheat kids.” He puts in numerous hours to work with players and help them reach their fullest potential. He has an amazing ability to get the very most out of each player. Behind his loud voice and high expectations is a soft heart and compassionate coach. All three of Coach Rumrey’s children were first team all state athletes at North Medford. However, he would say that his kids’ greatest accomplishments are the 7 beautiful grandchildren that they’ve given him and his amazing wife Julie. When not at practice, Coach Rumrey can be found at the ball park with Quinton, Alex, Lauren, Colson, Lewis, Lucia and Caroline.

Greg Winner, Assistant Coach, Pitching Coach
Since Coach Winner joined the coaching staff at North Medford in 2008, our teams have improved tremendously in every offensive category. Coach Winner pitches live batting practice every day for every player on our team. He also oversees the daily workouts for all of our pitchers. Coach Winner is held in very high regards as a pitching coach from many college coaches. Coach Winner is a highly sought after pitcher in the men’s fastpitch leagues from all over the region. As a coach on our staff, Coach Winner is loved and admired by all of our players and coaches. He is a humble servant and a great example of hard work. He cares deeply for each player and has a very gentle approach to working with kids. Greg and his wife Lynn love to travel abroad. They were in the stands watching the 2008 Team USA Softball Team play in Beijing, China.

Casey Mayben, Volunteer Assistant
Coach Mayben has been coaching in the Black Tornado Softball program in many capacities since 1998. A former player for Coach Larry Binney, Casey was anxious to come back to the program and give back. As a player at North Medford, she played almost every position on the field. She received first team all conference and first team all state recognition. She went on to play softball at George Fox University. She was a part George Fox’s 1994 conference and regional championship team. She also had the privilege of playing softball in the summer for Coach Danny Miles – the legendary Men’s Basketball and Softball coach at OIT.
Coach Mayben loves sharing life with our players. She oversees many of the administrative and organizational aspects to our program. Mostly though, she works hard to be a positive support to her husband (and Head Coach Mike Mayben). She is always available to the players for whatever needs they may have on any given day: first-aid, hugs, dinner, uniforms, tutoring, humor, etc.

Dan Stevens, Volunteer Head JV Coach
Coach Stevens is one of the most knowledgeable coaches on our staff. He is a true student of the game, and he has a gift for communicating with young athletes. Coach Stevens joined the coaching staff in 2007, but we had to share him that year as he also helped coach the 2007 State Champions North Medford Baseball Team.
In addition to his great contributions to our program as a coach, Dan has also given a lasting gift to all of the current and future softball players in our area. He and his daughter Jenna (Class of 2010) spearheaded the effort to raise the funds and build our home softball field here at North Medford. We went from having no home field at all to having one of the most beautiful facilities in the state. This was a huge undertaking and required hundreds of hours of work for Dan. The field was completed in 2008.
Coach Stevens understands the importance of perfecting all of the small details of the game. He loves to work with kids in small groups and break down the intricacies of the game. He also loves to see kids have their hard work pay off and translate to success on and off of the field. Dan is married to Roxanne and they have two daughters – Julianne and Jenna.

Chris Campbell, Volunteer Assistant Coach
Campbell is a great addition to our program. He is very helpful and is willing to work in any capacity that we need him. He can often be found at the field after hours and on weekends working to get our fields playable and sprucing up our facilities. He has put in many years of volunteer work in for Medford American Little League and many other youth programs. Coach Campbell is assisting with our high school staff this year and in our ASA program. He is very positive with the kids that he coaches. Coach Campbell is married to Katy and they have two kids – Kyle and Cassie.

Russ Gann, Volunteer Assistant Coach
Gann officially joined our high school coaching staff last year. He has been a valuable worker, volunteer, ASA coach, etc. for six years now. His “Daughter number 3”, Marissa, played in our high school program from 2009-2012. She was the starting left fielder on our 2012 state championship team. Coach Gann is an amazing servant and person. He can be seen almost every day working on our fields. He also helps Coach Mayben work with the outfielders everyday during high school practice. Coach Gann also coaches our 14U ASA team this year. Coach Gann has a heart to see kids reach their fullest potential, and his positive encouragement can be heard whenever he is around. Coach Gann lives in Medford with his wife Shawna and their “Daughter number 4” Lily – who plays for our 14U Black Team. Their “Daughter number 1” (Laurel) is a recent college graduate and newlywed. “Daughters number 2 and 3” (Kayleen and Marissa) attend college in Arkansas.
