State Champions, 2012

Softball State Champions 2012
Softball State Champions 2012
Congratulations to the 2012 North Medford Softball team for one of the best seasons in Black Tornado history.  The Black Tornado went 29-1 on the season (winning the last 24 straight) with their only loss coming from Southridge during a spring break tournament hosted in Medford.  The Black Tornado dominated the season with junior Maryssa Becker at the mound and a plethora of "rookie" and "seasoned" talent behind her.

The game on Saturday in Oregon State University's softball complex went off like clockwork.  Rather than waiting for the last few innings to explode offensively (as the Black Tornado had done in most of her playoff run), Marissa Gann had a leadoff single in the top of the second and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt from Sierra Berryessa.  With two outs and Gann on second, Hannah Leming hit a line drive into right field that allowed Gann to score and advanced Leming to second.  Joci Ellis was up next and was able to get her second hit of the day in the fashion of a RBI single up the middle.  This gave the Black Tornado the 2-0 lead that they held until the final two innings of the game.  However, with Becker's prowess at the mound and the incredible defense behind her, South Salem was unable to score for the duration of the game, which ended with a Black Tornado win (final score 3-0).

This marks the Black Tornado's second state championship under Mike Mayben and his staff (and the sixth state championship in history), with the first championship coming during the 2009 season (in which the current senior class were freshman).  This season was also record breaking due to the 19 shutouts earned by the Black Tornado!
